Built From the Ground Up

The Story Behind Casey’s Crazy Engines

Dan Benefield didn’t just learn engines — he grew up inside them. At just 7 or 8 years old, Dan was already in his uncle’s garage, turning wrenches and absorbing everything he could about how engines work, what makes them fail, and what makes them fly.

His uncle and cousin Davy were legendary engine builders — responsible for some of the most powerful hot rod engines ever built. Davy raced his 1968 Chevelle for years and never lost a race. The secrets they passed down to Dan weren’t written in any book. They came from decades of experimentation, failure, and breakthrough — and Dan was right there learning all of it.

Today Dan runs Casey’s Crazy Engines entirely on his own out of Casey, Illinois, with over 30 years of professional experience. Every engine that comes through his shop gets his full attention — no helpers, no outsourcing, no shortcuts.

Started in His Uncle’s Garage
Dan began learning engines as a young kid working alongside his uncle — one of the most respected engine builders around. He learned not just the basics but closely guarded secrets of performance engine building that most mechanics never get to see.
The
Legacy
Family Racing Heritage
His cousin Davy raced a 1968 Chevelle powered by engines they built together. Davy never lost a race. The modifications they developed — unique bearing tolerances, oil port drilling techniques, water passage rerouting — were never shared outside the family. Dan carries those secrets today.

30+ Years on His Own
After years of working and learning, Dan went out on his own and built his reputation engine by engine in Casey, Illinois. He invested in every machine needed to do the job right — so nothing ever has to be sent out. Cam to crank. All in one shop.
Now
Casey’s Crazy Engines Today
Dan builds everything from reliable stock rebuilds to 500+ horsepower 383 strokers. He builds for classic cars, hot rods, street rods, and demolition derby — each type built completely differently with techniques most engine builders have never heard of.
What Makes Dan Different
This isn’t your average engine shop
🔧
Everything In-House
Most shops send out their machine work. Dan does every single operation himself — boring, honing, balancing, magnafluxing, head work — all under one roof. Nothing waits on another shop.
🏁
Proven Racing Secrets
Dan carries techniques passed down from a family of championship engine builders. Unique modifications to oil ports, water passages, and bearing tolerances that most builders have never tried — and that work.

Run Stand Break-In
Every engine Dan builds is broken in on a run stand before it goes back in your vehicle. You’re not the test run. The engine is dialed in before it ever sees your car.
🏆
30+ Years Experience
Dan has been building engines since he was a child. That’s over 30 years of hands-on knowledge that no certification or course can replicate. He’s seen it all and fixed it all.
🚗
Built for Every Purpose
Hot rods, street rods, classic cars, demolition derby — Dan builds engines differently for each application. A demo derby engine and a show car engine are completely different builds. He knows the difference.
